In 1989 Rev. Sharon Titian responded to the call on her life which led her to the remote village of Adidome in the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa.  Life was very hard there for a Canadian woman and Sharon suffered greatly during those early years.  Still the Lord used her there to expose the Trokosi fetish shrine system.  Under this system young girls are enslaved in the shrines to atone for the crime of a family member. They become the property of a fetish priest, and are deprived of food, medical help, education and basic needs, and suffer terrible reproach by their families and communities.

Sharon gained favour with the fetish priests and was able because of that to help the girls. For the next 10 years Sharon provided life skills and vocational training to enable these girls to become self-supporting, as well as teaching them the Word of God.  After accepting Jesus Christ into their hearts, they were delivered and set free from demonic oppression, shame, fear and guilt.

In 1994 Sharon was asked to provide evidence to the Parliament of Ghana to introduce a bill which would stop this cultural abuse of women and young girls.  By the grace of God, in 1998 a law was passed in Ghana to abolish the practice.

Vocational Training Center

A Vocational Training Center was established at Missions International (Titian Ministries International) where the then free Trokosi girls could learn skills which would help them to become independent.

After the former Trokosi girls were educated, the work continued with schooling for the poor of the area who needed economic help.  Literacy and vocational training were provided for both young men and women.

Biblical Studies Programs

A Biblical Studies Program was started after a request from local church leaders.  Over the years, the various Bible schools provided diplomas and degrees for Ghanaian students who desired education in biblical studies but would never be able to afford it.

In November 2002 Rev Sharon Titian hosted the first part-time extension program from Pinecrest Bible Training Centre in Upper New York State. Rev. Nancy Warner, Dr. Richard and Joan Ford, and Brother Isum were among some of the teachers who came over to teach.

In October 2006 Rev Sharon opened Mount Zion Bible College, a degree program that would enable local pastors to come and receive their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She received the Charter from Shalom Bible College and Seminary in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, under Dr. B. Rice.

Loaves and Fishes

In 2004 Rev. Sharon Titian established a 5-day a week feeding program for the elderly in Adidome. There were many hungry and vulnerable older men and women, but no social assistance in Ghana for them. Many elderly were often abandoned.  To meet the needs of these people Rev. Sharon opened a soup kitchen in partnership with Rev. Daniel Akoa from the Lutheran Church. They began by serving over 25 people over the age of 80 with a warm meal and a teaching from the scriptures.  Many were led to the Lord over the years. The numbers of elderly grew to about 45, now over the age of 70.

Children of Zion

In obedience to the Lord, Rev. Titian opened the mission’s doors to orphaned and abused children in the Volta Region. Children of Zion first began in the Adidome facility which is located on the Volta River. Rev Sharon received the first needy children in 2003.  In 2004, she decided to apply to be a Children’s Home and received more children into the facility. In January 2005 the ministry was registered as an NGO.

She moved the children to Anloga into a barracks facility that belonged to the District Assembly on September 17th, 2009 and where she registered them into their new school. Sharon then began to look for land that would eventually become their permanent home. She was able to purchase 3 ½ acres on the ocean where she began the process of building once again.

Mount Zion Community Church

In 2007 Dr. Gertruda Armaly with a team of three ministered in Mount Zion Bible College.  Part of the curriculum of the College was for the students to do an outreach into the countryside where there were no churches.

A team of four went out on a Sunday afternoon, Pastor Fred Bansah, Pastor Bonnie Dekold, Ginger Bogden and James went to an area called New Bapka.  Pastor Fred had contacted the chief to see if they could have a meeting at his home.  After the gospel was preached the chief and his family accepted the Lord as their Savior.  That was the beginning of the ministry that now exists.

The Land, 5 ½ acres was purchased in 2007 and a rough shelter was put up.  The church grew quite quickly, and they needed a pastor.  Pastor Fred Bansah was asked to take on that position, so and his wife Blessing and two children moved to New Bakpa in May 2008.   Antioch Christian Ministries began to support the work.

A proper church facility was built in 2012 by ICM a church in the United States in partnership with King’s Voice Ministries.  The church was dedicated to the Lord on August 19th, 2012.

A CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP

Rev. Sharon Titian was called home to be with the Lord in July 2011. The next two years were very difficult. By the grace of God, the children were taken care of, but the rest of the ministry lay fallow for several years. God honoured Sharon’s hard work and wanted the ministry to continue. He already had a plan.

God began to move on the heart of Dr. Gertruda Armaly in Essex, Ontario Canada, who was a close friend of Sharon’s and familiar with the work. She had been over on 5 mission trips and was on the Titian Ministries Ghana Board. Dr. Armaly stepped into the position of International Chair on September 30, 2013 . A new board was voted in by the remaining members of the existing board: Chairperson Dr. Gerrie Armaly, Vice Chair Reg Titian, Treasurer Trevor Titian, Secretary Dr. Claude Page, Directors Michael Johnson and Seth Agbeyakah.

Pastor Mike and Joanne Johnson were the first mission team to go to Anloga in March of 2013. They met with Pastor Paul Akotey, who was overseeing the children, all his staff, and many of the children . They visited our facilities and took pictures to show us the level of repair needed.

In September of 2014 a team of 9 people went to Ghana to restore the headquarters in Adidome. Rev. Donna Rohrmiler had agreed to become our Director in Ghana and she would live in that facility. Rev. Donna moved in in October 2014.

Our next task would be to renovate the barracks for the children until the house on the ocean could be completed. At that time, we had 24 children in two homes. The older children lived with Xorve and William in a bungalow that was rented by the ministry. The younger children were located at the Barracks facility which had deteriorated since Rev. Sharon passed away. It had to undergo complete renovation with paint, screens, new bathroom, shower, and septic tank. New basic supplies were needed, such as beds, linens, tables, eating utensils, and clothing. With each mission trip came suitcases full of clothes and workers for the renovations, all from the families at Antioch Christian Ministries. The the play area was fenced in and and playground equipment was provided.

In December of 2014 we began to build a cement block fence around our ocean front facility. Because the property lay dormant for about 3 years, neighbors had begun to encroach on the land. It was vitally important that to begin the process of building parts of the wall to protect our land and to clearly mark the boundaries of the property. A 9-foot-high wall was finally completed all the way around the 3 ½ acre property.

On December 2016 another bridge was crossed when the apartment upstairs was completed with a full kitchen, bedrooms, and dining/living area. Downstairs a bedroom, bathroom, study hall, community room and storage room were built in the open area.  A large kitchen area was later added onto the building. The older children in the house with William and Xorve were able to move in.

Our next large project was to build the bungalow which was started in 2019.  The bungalow consisted of 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen. With the completion of the bungalow, all our children could finally live on the same property. On June 30th 2020 the children moved in. There was great excitement as they moved all their belongings into the new facility.

Transition From Children’s Home to Foster Care

In 2020, we were no longer a children’s home but had shifted over to Foster Care.  William and Xorve were trained by the Department of Social Services though it took some time for them to be given their first foster child. In the meantime, they received some children for temporary placement.

We also developed a farm on our Anloga property. We put down 2 wells and installed an irrigation system. Two acres were prepared by fertilizing the sand with manure and other fertilizers. We planted okra, corn, and shallots. We faced many challenges from the iron in our well water, and the hot wind and salt spray from the ocean. When COVID hit the world, the cost of everything increased and the fertilizer for the farm increased drastically. We had some good yields and some not so good. Mr. Fred Kwao-Brooks gave oversite to this project.

Restoration of the Bible School and Loaves and Fishes

An IAM Bible School was opened in November 2015 when the first class of 8 students was admitted. The teachers were all pastors from the community. This program is out of International Accelerated Missions, Berne, NY, USA. The IAM Bible School is a part-time, one-year program that has a great impact on the lives and ministries of those who attend.

On December 28, 2016, we began the restoration of the Loaves and Fishes ministry to the elderly. The people were full of joy, they had not heard from Titian Ministries for years and now they were here again, anticipating the Christmas gifts they were going to receive. Many of the people were those who had been part Rev. Sharon’s daily soup kitchen. We gave out 49 gifts of food, and it was also our opportunity to share the love of Christ with them through the Word and prayer.

Winning Star School

Because Pastor Fred, the pastor of Mount Zion Community Church, was a visionary, he soon added Winning Star International School, a Christian children’s school to the church property. Before COVID, the school was doing very well. But after COVID, it was struggling.

In March of 2022 we began to give support to Winning Star School.  Pastor Fred discussed the situation with us and we agreed to partner with him to provide a Christian education to the orphans and poor children of his community. We started by helping with staff salaries and with food for the children. The only fee the children were charged was a coin to pay for food each day, but many were not able to even do that.

We have slowly built on that start to provide desks, a computer lab, curriculum, and sports supplies. We are currently able to increase to renovate and build needed facilities.
